A cloud platform refers to the hardware and operating system that a server uses to support the remote operation of both hardware and software products. It allows various services to be deployed over the internet.

Instead of storing your data on a specific hard drive or local storage device, cloud storage lets you store your information in a remote database. As long as you have an internet connection, you can access and use the data and software programs through any electronic device.

Cloud platforms have become increasingly popular for both individuals and businesses because they offer advantages such as cost savings, improved productivity, faster performance, efficiency, and enhanced security.

There are different types of cloud platforms available, each catering to different needs. They provide various models, services, and deployment options. The three main types of cloud platforms include:

  • Public cloud: Public cloud platforms are provided by independent companies that offer computing resources over the internet. These platforms act as an extension of a company’s IT infrastructure, allowing them to host parts of their services and infrastructure on servers owned by third parties.
  • Private cloud: A private cloud is a platform dedicated to one company and is often hosted either on-premises or by a third-party service provider. It is a single-tenant system, meaning only one company has access to its resources. There are different ways to manage these resources.
  • Hybrid cloud: A hybrid cloud combines both public and private cloud technologies. It allows seamless movement of applications and data between different platforms, offering the flexibility to adjust to varying needs.

Some of the most popular cloud computing platforms include:

  1. AWS Cloud: Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers cloud computing services on demand. It started in 2006 when Amazon made its IT infrastructure available to the public. AWS helps individuals and businesses host websites and applications, store and analyze data, all on a pay-as-you-go basis. Companies like Spotify, Netflix, Adobe, and Airbnb rely on AWS due to its reliability, with an availability rate of about 99.99%.
  2. Microsoft Azure: Azure is one of the leading cloud service platforms, offering a wide range of services suitable for businesses across various industries. Launched in 2010, it enables users to run cloud-based services or integrate them with existing infrastructure. Azure has become a trusted option for companies looking to digitally transform their operations.
  3. Google Cloud Platform (GCP): Google Cloud uses the same infrastructure that powers Google’s own products, like Google Search and YouTube. GCP is divided into three main areas: computing, storage, and networking. It offers various tools for managing servers, data storage, and networking, making it a versatile platform for cloud-based services.
  4. Oracle Cloud Platform: Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is a public cloud designed to run business applications. It provides tools and services for building cloud-native, open-source, and mobile apps, allowing businesses to seamlessly link on-premises and cloud systems. Oracle Cloud is known for its hybrid cloud capabilities, helping businesses save costs and improve agility.
  5. Alibaba Cloud Platform: Alibaba Cloud offers a wide range of cloud services, including databases, networking, security, analytics, and more. It ensures 99.9% availability by storing three copies of each object in its Object Storage Service (OSS). Payment is based on actual usage, with no upfront costs or long-term commitments.
  6. IBM Cloud Platform: IBM Cloud combines Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) to provide an integrated experience for businesses of all sizes. It is ideal for hosting mission-critical workloads, offering high levels of compliance, security, and management. IBM Cloud supports global scalability and provides next-generation hybrid cloud capabilities along with advanced data and AI services.
